Digital Piracy Will Always Exist, but It Shouldn’t
Probably everyone has downloaded a file that violated copyrights, and perhaps everyone has ever watched a film or a TV series online from a source that wasn’t entirely legal. Perhaps we all understand that sometimes downloading a movie, a series or anything else is just the most convenient way and here we have also written 5 reasons why pirate copies are still being downloaded today.
While we can understand the reasons for downloading, it is still something we should avoid if at all possible. Now let’s take a look at 5 reasons why digital piracy is bad movie and why it is in our own interest to not do that.
1) While Digital Piracy Is Not Theft, It Kind of Is
Often, downloading copyrighted works is said to be a victimless crime. Instead of stealing a car, it just creates a digital copy of the file, which no one is missing. That sounds pretty logical, and to a certain extent, it is true.
The theft of a movie, TV series or anything else does not mean that the authors have lost something physically, but that someone else is making money on their work. Pirate groups function because they don’t really have to do anything. They just také someone else’s work, share it for free and earn money bz placing ads. And the fact that this theft is quite clear.
While it is true that someone who eventually looks at the film or downloads something else would not otherwise go to the cinema or buy the product otherwise, but using illegal means is still a support of digital pirate groups that steal and share the works of others.
An example might be if you wrote a book. You spend thousands of hours of work, proofreading, reviewing and so on, so that everything is great for the reader. And somebody will come and offer the book free without your knowledge and earn money on your hard work. Maybe not as much as you as the author of the book. But this way, they can steal thousands of books, while you can only write so many. Nobody would like being parasited on.
Another example may be from life would be stowing away. The bus will drive its route anyway, whether we are on board or not. The fact that we are on the bus without paying for it does not mean that we have caused the damage. Or does it? We use a service that is beneficial to us. Although we might be able stowe away and get away with it, it is certainly right to buy a ticket. Few would probably recommend stowing away as the right means of travel.
2) It Is Possible to Get Everything Legally
It is true that mainly movie and TV series distributors should still work on this part and unify the libraries, but virtually any movie or TV series can be watched legally, often completely free.
Who says that the show is simply impossible to get, even if they would like to pay for it, they usually don’t speak the truth or they are looking for the video extremaly badly. As far as all mainstream work is concerned, everything is available via multiple media.
In terms of music, iTunes, Spotify and more offer absolutely fantastic libraries. You can also find virtually any song legally free on YouTube where music is clips are uploaded by the authors themselves.
3) You Can Unknowingly Share While Downloading, Which Is Against the Law
As a rule of thumb, you can download anything legally, but you would violate the law if you shared or uploaded a copyrighted file. This might depend on the country, but this is true most of the time.
Downloading via torrents works in a way that you download files from computers that have that file and make it available for others. But you also share the file yourself, so others can download it from your computer. After you download the file, you can make it inaccessible for others instantly, but the fact is that you made it available during your download. Although it is very unlikely that anyone will go after you just for downloading a movie or a game, it is possible.
Internet providers know about everything you send or receive over the network, which can be solved by using a VPN, but it is still a violation of the law. Needless to say that it is also against the law to upload such files to various services and make any profit.
4) The Purchase of the Product Supports the Authors, Who Can Then Create Some More
Creating anything takes time at the very least. Although the author of the book writes everything, so they do not need to buy any material, but they also need to buy food, pay rent and so on while they are writing. By not getting paid for their work, they could just stop writing for good. And that is what we are talking about “just” about the authors of the books who put the time into the work. The production of films, series and music costs huge money, which must be returned.
The fact is that when the authors make money, it motivates them to create more. Thanks to the money earned, they know that people liked the work. What needs to be said is that many authors fail because their work is not worth much, but they should know that they failed because they could have done better, not because someone stole their work.
So, if you enjoyed a piece of work even if you downloaded it from and illegal source, it is good to thank the authors by purchasing their work legally and contribute.
5) Good Old Moral Values
The last poins may be the most vital. Sharing and downloading pirated files just isn’t moral. Yes, to a certain extent distributors themselves are to blame themselves, but often it is just an effort to save every penny and not to pay no matter what.
The claim that creators already have enough money is, at best, excuses to justify illegal downloading. There are obviously some exceptions, and sometimes a piece of work cannot be found legally. But this is so very rare and very much outside mainstream art.
Probably everyone including the author of this article has ever downloaded a movie, a series, a book, or anything else, but we should learn that even though it is possible to get something free, it is right to pay for the service or the product fairly.
